The Life of the Great Don Quixote as Written by the Jew Antonio José da Silva
2021
London Jewish Museum & King Alfred Pheonix Theatre
Translation, Adaptation & Direction
A 21st century re-imagining of the Portuguese playwright Antonio José da Silva’s version of the story of Don Quixote & Sancho Panza.
Written in 1733 as an operetta for marionettes, it was first produced soon after A.J da Silva was first imprisoned by the Inquisition. Hugely successful in his time -in part due to the subversiveness of his comedies – he remains largely unknown outside of Portuguese speaking countries. Comissioned by Tsitsit Festival 2021
